Discussion 2: Your Leadership Profile
Do you believe you have the traits to be an effective leader? Perhaps you are already in a supervisory role, but as has been discussed previously, appointment does not guarantee leadership skills.
How can you evaluate your own leadership skills and behaviors? You can start by analyzing your performance in specific areas of leadership. In this Discussion, you will complete Gallup’s StrengthsFinder assessment. This assessment will identify your personal strengths, which have been shown to improve motivation, engagement, and academic self-conference. Through this assessment, you will discover your top five themes—which you can reflect upon and use to leverage your talents for optimal success and examine how the results relate to your leadership traits.

I enjoyed this week’s discussion because I found the StrengthFinder assessment to be interesting! The Signature Themes report presents my five most dominant themes of talent out of the 34 themes measured. My top five signature themes of talent are Harmony, Discipline, Relator, Responsibility, and Focus. I agree with the results for the most part, but I found that this assessment was an eye opener to help me determine my strengths and weaknesses in both my personal and professional goals. I do believe that one of my talents is Harmony, but I am surprised that it was ranked number one. Harmony is said to be one of my guiding values. It frustrates me to know how much time is wasted by people trying to impose their views on others, instead, I look for areas of agreement. Before this assessment I probably would have guessed by top ranked talent would be Discipline or Responsibility. Everything needs to be ordered and planned. I thrive on structure and routine. I focus on timelines and deadlines, and I get satisfaction by completing a task and crossing it off my to do list. Although, being overly responsible can be a burden at times, when assigning new responsibilities, people look to me first because they know it will get done, at times I have had coworkers tell me that leadership takes advantage of me because of this. Now, Realtor surprises me but then it doesn’t. I agree with the results about the Relator theme, pulling me toward people I already know. I do not necessarily shy away from meeting new people—I just derive a great deal of pleasure and strength from being around my close friends. I have a small group of friends that I have been friends with for over 20 years but because I am a military spouse and I move around a lot, I am pushed to make new friends, which isn’t always easy for me. Finally, Focus, I agree with. It is said, with Focus, that each year, each month, and even each week I set goals- which is true. My Focus reminds everyone that if something is not helping you move toward your destination, then it is not important. I see this in myself, even with small tasks at work, if we are in a situation where there is a problem we need to solve, all other conversation not pertaining to this is unnecessary.
Building leadership skills requires a lot of actions and risk taking (Goren, 2014). This assessment can be used as a guide or a tool for professional and personal growth. After going over my results of this assessment I have learned my strengths, however, I see my weaknesses. Two core values that I would like to strengthen based on the results of the StrengthFinder assessment are Confidence and Boldness. Because Harmony is my most dominant theme of talent I tend to steer away from confrontation. I have struggled to work on this my whole nursing career. For example, if a manager were to tell me to do something, even if I might not agree with it, I would do it. I must work on being more confident in myself and becoming bold enough to stand up for myself. Two strengths that I would like to work on based on the results of the StrengthFinder assessment are Delegation and Communication, or I might call these my weaknesses. I absolutely hate delegating tasks to anyone, even though I should- particularly when I am charge nurse. Part of this problem is communication, for example, there are times where I may need some help, however, because I have a problem with delegating and communicating, I usually end up doing everything myself. Two characteristics that I would like to strengthen based on the results of the assessment are Openness and Spontaneous. This is more of my personal life rather than my professional, however, I wish sometimes I was more open and spontaneous instead of always being so Responsible and Focused.
A good leader ought to have certain traits such as sincerity, passion, honesty, courage, confidence, and wisdom to effectively collaborate with his/her followers (Chidiku, 2017). I guess after going through my results and analyzing my strengths and weaknesses, I am not surprised by my results. This assessment only reminds me of what I need to work on to become a better person, a better nurse, and a better leader.

Leadership Profile
Learning about our natural strengths will guide us to succeed in what we do. To be a successful leader, one should possess impeccable qualities and traits. Believing in ourselves and our strengths will help us become good leaders who can drive others to achieve their goals (Broome & Marshall, 2021). Laureate Education (2014) suggests that leaders must have a great passion for guidance and effective communication skills to influence others effectively. This week’s discussion will help us discover our strengths and create a way to enhance them.
Strengths Finder Assessment Results
After taking the CliftonStrenghts Assessment, the top 5 dominant themes emerged regarding leadership qualities. The top five signature themes include responsibility, arranger, harmony, consistency, and discipline (Gallup, 2021). This assessment was fascinating as I would allow seeing things on paper about me that were very true for the type of individual I am. However, the results are not surprising; they brought self-awareness to the essential qualities and attributes that help build effective leadership behaviors.
Two Core Values
Core values are the essential elements that form the foundation on which we perform work and manage ourselves. These core values involve awareness and realization of perception that reflect our feelings and experiences (Lin et al., 2016). The core values identified in the theme report will help us enhance our leadership skills. Based on the theme description, responsibility and harmony emerge as my two core values. Responsibility implies the competent performance of professional duties and obligations. According to Voegtlin (2016), responsible leadership involves actively engaging with stakeholders, participating in decision-making, and creating solutions to any challenges. As an emergency room nurse, being responsible means being able to respond and be equipped to any patient care needs. Harmony is a feeling of peace and perfect synchronization of positive core values (Gallup, 2021). Such harmony and balance build our inner strength, thus allowing us to understand what is truly important. A harmonious workplace will make the work more enjoyable and productive.
Two Strengths
Arranger and consistency are two strengths that the CliftonStrengths identified. As an arranger, one is more concerned with aligning all the variables when facing a complex situation (Gallup, 2021). Arranger is a strength that enables an individual to react and adapt to situations when things do not go as planned. As a charge nurse in an emergency room, one goal of an arranger is to make sure that staff has the right resources to get things done and can maximize resources to achieve maximum results. Meanwhile, consistency refers to doing the same thing in the same way at a higher standard. Being consistent, or lack thereof can define success or failure. Successful leaders identify consistency as one of the most vital traits (Sorek et al., 2018). Consistency is a crucial component in nursing leadership. When leaders are consistent in their actions, nurses will know the expectations and will perform tasks effectively.
Two Characteristics to Strengthen
The two characteristics that need strengthening are discipline and sharing of responsibility. The discipline stems from the need to be in order and planned. Discipline focus on routines, structures, timelines, and deadlines (Gallup, 2021). Being disciplined enable leaders to command respect from other staff, work well with the team members, and handle the responsibility consistently. According to Ismartaya (2021), the performance of employees in an organization is influenced by work motivation and work discipline. Another trait that needs strengthening is sharing of responsibility. While responsibility is one of my core values, Gallup (2021) suggested that sharing responsibility will allow others to take ownership of their actions. Sharing the responsibility enhances team dynamics, increases overall team morale, and contributes to the organization’s success (El Zein et al., 2019).
